Featured Marine Aquarium: Karl Marsh
Our next featured tank is proudly owned by a regular customer Karl Marsh, Karls tank is a custom build aquarium by Fish Tank Fabrications 1600x600x550mm with a total volume of 630 litres or 166 gallons (US).
Overview of the Equipment Used in the Sump
Return Pump: Karl has recently upgraded his main return from the Ecotech S2 pump in favour of the larger more powerful Ecotech L2 pump. He controls this currently via the beta version of the ecotech Mobius app.
Skimmer: The chosen skimmer in this tank is the Deltec 1456 dc skimmer, deltec make some high end skimmers and this model is suitable for up to 1000 litres of aquarium volume.
Heaters: Karl has opted for the super popular D & D titanium heater in the 600watt format coupled to the DD Temperature controller to ensure consistent temperature in his aquarium.
UV: There are two Vecton 600 watt UV's running in Karls tank providing optimum visual water clarity and helping with fish health.
Other sump items: Well from the photos you can see Karl has converted his sump into a frag tank, We can see an MP10 in there, its own flipper, there's a clarisea filter roll keeping maintenance to a minimum and an ALR Alga reactor to grow that cheato and keep on top of the nitrates and phosphates.
Dosing: Dosing is controlled by 2x DD P1 single head dosing pumps on ATI Essentials Pro, combined with Aquaforest ABEV (aminos, build, energy & vitality) for coral health and growth.
What's in the tank?
The tank is a custom build aquarium on steel frame stand with custom pipework to a clarisea filter roller.
Substrate: appears to be a standard 1-1.2mm coral sand, nice and thin, no deep sand bed in this aquarium.
Powerheads: This tanks flow is pushed around by a pair of Ecotech Vortech MP40 powerheads controlled by the beta mobius app. Combined these should give a good varied and possible random flow through the aquarium depending on Karls configuration.
Lighting: Karl has the tank powered by four XR15 Gen 4 pro lights on the RMS rail mounting system.
Light schedule is simple with a 12 noon till 12 midnight photoperiod with 90 mins of ramp at either end with 100% blue, 100% Violet, 100% UV and only 7% white and an overall intensity of 70%.
Maintenance and Dosing
Karlhas tried to keep his maintenance to a minimum, the ALR1 reactor will hopefully be keeping his nitrates and phosphates under check for the most part. He is using the ATI Essentials Pro two part dosing system to take care of his tanks KH, Calcium, Magnesium and minor elements whilst dosing Aquaforest ABEV (aminos, build, energy, vitality) to provide coral nutrition.
On top of this is uses a D D Smart auto aqua water change kit to do daily automatic 11 litre water changes.
