There’s something so hypnotic and calming about having a stunning aquarium at home, full of beautiful fish swimming about - but it’s not just a matter of choosing your favourite fish and putting them in a big glass box of water.

You’ve also got to think about how you want to decorate your aquarium and the good news is that there’s a huge number of different accessories, themes and design ideas out there you can incorporate with ease.

First of all, however, you need to think about the size of your aquarium as this will help you decide just how many accessories you can bring in, while allowing your fish the space they need to swim freely about.

Always remember that the health of your fish should come first, so if you have a smaller tank, don’t fill it with items or you’ll restrict the amount of living space your fish have to enjoy. Think of your tank as having three separate zones - top, middle and bottom - and make sure there’s enough space for your fish to swim in each zone.

The type of fish you have can also have an impact on the kind of items you buy. If you have lots of very active fish, for example, you might want to invest in bubble makers, as you’ll need to make sure your fish have enough oxygen to keep them happy. Air-producing tank decorations can help keep the oxygen in the tank high.

You can also add levels of interest with submersive lights, lighting up the tank without disturbing your fish. These come in a range of different colours, so you can easily find some that suit your overall aesthetic.

Depending on what you’re putting in the tank, you may need to quarantine your decorations. If you buy something from a shop, it will most likely be safe but otherwise, you may want to boil toys and so on to ensure they’re safe.
