What Are The Best Fish For A Marine Tank Newbie?

If you have started to think about setting up a marine aquarium tank, you will have probably realised by now that there is a lot to think about! One of the most exciting parts of the process is deciding which colourful creatures you want to keep. It’s important to pick species which are compatible, and some that contribute to the overall health of the tank.

Ocellaris Clownfish

The Ocellaris Clownfish, also known as the Common Clownfish, is a popular low-maintenance species, ideal for new hobbyists. They are generally considered to be non-aggressive, and will rarely fight over territory or mating rights, as some fish can tend to do.

The vast majority of clownfish available to buy have been tank raised, so they are ready to go without any acclimatising. They have an eye-catching orange body with white bands outlined in black, making them instantly recognisable. The Common Clownfish is also known to be a very easy species to breed, so you could buy a mating pair.

Flame Angelfish

This dwarf angelfish is a bright reddish orange colour with black vertical stripes and blue tipped fins, which will add interest to any aquarium. It is popular as it has a reputation for adapting easily the tank environment.

Twinspot Goby

The Twinspot Goby is an easy fish to care for, and is also a good breeder. It will rarely act aggressively towards other fish, although it can behave territorially with its own kind. It is light coloured, with distinctive eyespots on the dorsal fins.

Other types of goby fish, such as the Yellow Watchman Goby, are also considered peaceful and easy to care for. The yellow goby has a characterful slightly grumpy face, and a yellow-orange body with bright blue spots on the head and fins. Only a mating pair should be added to a tank at any one time, as they will sometimes attack other gobies.

Yellow Tang

This fish has an eye-catching bright yellow oval shaped body, making it the star of any aquarium. It doesn’t hide its light under a bushel either; it loves to keep busy and zip about, making it one of the most popular marine aquarium fish. It is considered an easy fish to care for, and is generally peaceful, although it can be aggressive towards its own kind.

Heniochus Butterfly Fish

This type of fish is also known as the Longfin Bannerfish. It has a distinctive long white dorsal filament, and black, white, and yellow markings. It is usually peaceful with other fish that have been introduced to the tank at the same time, and may even clean other fish.

Wrasse

There are several species of Wrasse, and some, such as the eight line flasher wrasse, the shimmer fairy/pink margin wrasse, and the white banded possum wrasse, are considered to be easy to care for.

Many of them are brilliantly multi-coloured, making them a firm favourite for marine aquarium keepers. They adapt well to most conditions, and are a very peaceful fish.
