Picassos are a highly sought after variant of the Percula Clownfish. The Picasso variant occurs naturally in the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea however it is exceptionally hard to find. ORAs strain of Picassos originated in 2004 from a single wild male from the Solomon Islands, which they paired with a typical Onyx female. In subsequent years ORA® has added additional wild collected Picassos into their breeding program. Most Picasso clowns in the industry can be traced back to ORAs breeding program. The Picasso's are beautiful fish which exhibit extra white mainly on their center stripe. Each individual fish is unique and hand-selected by experienced graders. These fish are graded on the amount of white present, the oddness of the striping, and the rarity of the markings. ORA does not use a definitive set of criteria for grading Picassos. Their fish may be radically marked on one side and merely have an extra blob of white on the other. Premium Picassos are specimens of superior quality that are hand-selected for their uniqueness. These astounding fish exhibit even greater white coverage than ORA's regular Picassos. Experienced graders look for premium features such as extra stripes or markings on the face and head that have been recognized as desirable patterns always consider the oddness and rarity of the striping, making each fish a unique specimen. Only an extremely small percentage of offspring qualify as ORA Premium Picassos. Captive-bred fish have a unique advantage over wild-harvested species, as they are generally very hardy and more accustomed to conditions found in the home aquarium. Therefore, captive-bred fishes make a great choice for novices and seasoned aquarists alike. The Captive-Bred Picasso Clownfish is easy to breed in the home aquarium. The females will be the largest of the pair and the two fish will usually stay close to each other in the aquarium. Clownfish are egg layers and will deposit the eggs on a flat surface and defend the eggs from other tank mates. The eggs will normally hatch in 8-11 days depending on the water temperature. The fry must be reared in a separate aquarium on a diet of rotifers followed by baby brine shrimp.
